Evidence of what the Community, City, and State thought of
his efforts can be demonstrated in the establishment of a
mixed use development named for him while he was alive,
and the renaming of a street for him in 2007.
The foundation’s mission is to assist young people with
their education growth, community work and personal
growth by:
•Providing monetary incentives and direction so that the
youth will have the opportunity to attend the school of their
choice, perform community work of their choice, and
develop at the speed of their choice.
•Increasing their awareness of education incentives,
advantages of community involvement, setting high
standards to ensure that goals are met, and met at the
highest uncompromising level.
The Foundation was formed to carry on
the humanitarian works of Rev. Sass. His
love for the youth of our society led him to
assist them in obtaining employment and
higher education. Although his love and
his vision for the community exceeded
many of his contemporaries, his most
endearing quality was his interest in
helping young people succeed in their
chosen field. Emphasizing the
importance of education he read daily
and continued to learn as much as he
could until his sight began to fail him in
1999. Born January 1, 1911 he lived a
full and useful life until March 2001. He
was called to pastor his first and only
church, St Matthews Baptist Church in
Harlem, New York in 1946. After
pastoring for over 53 and one half years
he retired in August 2000. At the age of
90 the time came for his departure from
this life. He fought the good fight, he
finished his course and he kept the faith.
The family wanted to continue his
humanitarian work and in June 200l
established THE REV. DR. JOHN J.
SASS MEMORIAL FOUNDATION.
